Papers primarily include transcribed copies of correspondence between James Anderson and family members across Pennsylvania. These letters describe family life, social conditions and medical care in Montgomery and Clarion Counties. Of note are descriptions of travels to Venango County (1836) and Clarion County (1840), an accident on the Allegheny Portage Railroad (2/21/1853) and a medical case study of a physically abused indentured servant (2/21/1853). The Allegheny Portage Railroad covered a 36 mile stretch up and down the sides of Allegheny Mountain between Johnstown (Cambria Co.) and Hollidaysburg (Blair Co.). Built between 1831 and 1833, the Railroad used a system of inclined planes to link the two lines of the Pennsylvania Canal.
